This auction is for a restored, working Airline Bakelite radio, Model 04BR-511A, manufactured for Montgomery Ward & Co. by the Belmont Radio Corporation in 1940. A copy of the six page manufacturer’s Instructions for Installation, Operation and Service (schematic, alignment procedure and replacement parts list) is included. This is an AC/DC (105-125 volts), 5 tube Super-Heterodyne AM (standard broadcast - 550 to 1720 kilohertz) radio also referred to as an “All American Five”. Tube compliment: 12SA7, 12SK7, 12SQ7, 35L6GT, and 35Z5GT. Its dimensions are 7.5” wide, 5” deep, and 5.5” high and weighs 3lbs 9ozs. It fits perfectly on a bookshelf. The cabinet, including the original knobs, dial lens and metal antenna back, was cleaned of years of dirt and grime and hand-polished revealing the lustrous walnut Bakelite with subtle black swirls you see in the pictures. There are no oils, clear lacquers, wax or other coatings applied to the cabinet. What you see is pure unadulterated Bakelite. There are no chips, cracks or hidden repairs. All the hardware attaching the chassis and the metal antenna back to the cabinet – pushpins, knurled finger bolts, washers, etc -- are present and original. The chassis was also meticulously cleaned of dirt, dust and grime. All wax/paper & electrolytic capacitors were replaced with modern equivalents – the top mounted electrolytic “can” was electrically disconnected and left in place; all resistors were checked for proper values and replaced as required; all tubes were replaced with strong testing NOS (new old stock) tubes. All moving parts were cleaned and re-lubricated. The volume control was cleaned and exhibits no scratchiness. It has a new, safe power cord. Finally, a full alignment was performed to manufacturer’s specs. This cute “midget” radio, with just the internal antenna, tunes and properly tracks across the dial with plenty of volume, good tone and no hum. If reception is poor at your location, adding a short wire antenna to the terminal provided on the back of the radio will significantly improve reception. The radio is too small to accommodate a dial light. The radio will be carefully packaged and double boxed for shipment. Buyer pays calculated shipping cost, and I will provide insurance for the final auction value. I welcome foreign bidders; payment by PayPal only. I will repair the electronics of this radio free of charge, parts and labor, for 90 days after sale, and free labor for 180 days after that. If you have any problems with the radio in the future, e-mail me and we'll work something out.
