This auction is for a restored antique or vintage 1951 RCA bakelite tube radio. Model X-551. A beautiful bakelite tabletop set with an element of machine age design. From a time when radio truly was king, this all American classic measures about 8" tall X 12" wide X 6" deep. This is a restored and working radio ready to display and enjoy. All capacitors have been replaced, all resistors more than 10% out of tolerance were replaced, and all tubes were tested and replaced if found to be weak. A new line cord has also been added to replace the unsafe and crumbling original. Lastly, the set was aligned and then bench tested (played) for a minimum of 48 hours to ensure reliability and peak performance. As a result of this entire process, the set sounds very warm, clear, and plays without hum. The cabinet is a wonderful dark chocolate colored bakelite with no cracks, breaks, or hidden repairs. While the cabinet of this set has no swirling in the bakelite, it still has a gorgeous reflective quality. What you are looking at is the original hand polished bakelite with all of its natural qualities still retained. Unlike other sellers, I do not use oils, lacquers, or gloss topcoats. None of that here, or on any of my other radios. Each of my radio cabinets are hand polished by me, investing significant time and attention to every detail to bring you a set worth displaying and enjoying for years to come. No overnight restorations here. RCA is credited for manufacturing some of the most memorable radios in our history. This particular set is no exception. While produced in 1951, this radio has subtle hints of the machine age in its design. Due mostly to the bulls eye grille design and the brass hardware that compliments the bakelite. The chassis shows its age with a few very small spots of rust but overall is in very nice condition. The set comes with the original RCA back board which is not something that you see very often on restored radios these days. Most sellers opt for reproduction backs or worse, nothing at all. The knobs are original to the set and have also been polished to a beautiful gloss with no cracks or chips. The metal 'button' that you see behind the volume knob is concealing the phono jack. This is original to the set. Simply remove the metal "button" or "plug" and it will expose it. The dial scale numbers are gold, easy to read, and with no flaking or fading. A red light indicator is located directly under the brass top strip. When the radio is powered on, the indicator illuminates nicely, even in a well lit room. All of the brass hardware is original to the set. Interesting to note that the hardware on these models does not appear to be "solid brass" as some sellers would have you believe. On the contrary, the hardware looks to be brass plated. This is why I opted to not polish out any minor flaws found on the hardware. In doing so, it would remove the brass "coloring" completely, taking it all down to an aluminum or dull silver appearance. With that being said, there are some areas of wear found on some of the brass hardware. This is conducive with age. Naturally there is some fading on the feet. A very small spot on the center of the dial pointer knob has faded to silver. And some very small 'flea bites' on the top left edge of the top strip. These very minor flaws are stated here in fairness but I would not hesitate to let them stand in the way of giving this radio a prominent spot in any collection. Please view all photos. Overall beautiful condition, making it a sure conversation starter that's ready to display and enjoy in your home or office. Sold 'as is' pictured and described. I have many more tube radios to come, so please be sure to add me to your favorites list. Shipping Shipping is via USPS Priority Mail, with delivery confirmation.
