This is probably the best of the Transoceanic collection . A highly rare and desirable Military Transoceanic from circa 1953 . I have owned this great radio for over 25 years now . It is one of my pride and joys and I hate to part with it but it has to be done ! It was completely restored electronicaly about 10 years ago . The restoration also included a "tap-in" to the radio's battery tubular compartment giving the radio the ability to play off a series of (10) 9 volt batteries (see photo) . These will need to be replaced if the buyer wishes to play it on batteries . This "9 volt battery set up" can easily be removed to return the radio to original . The radio plays fantastic ! It seems to have an almost enormous amount of power . I understand that this military version of the 500 is all BEEFED -up with much higher quality components . The ID tag on the fronT of the cabinet reads : SIGNAL CORPS US ARMY RADIO RECEIVER R-520/URR SERIAL NO. 15175-PH 52 , ZENITH RADIO CORP. I also understand that most of the I.D. tags were removed when they were demilitarized and sold . I don't know if this is one of the radios that"escaped" this procedure if so , this is truly a rare bird ! Perhaps someone may let me know if this is an original I.D. tag . This one tube radio has no name plate or other maker's identifier but research showed it to be a Navy type SE-1420 by Wireless Specialty Apparatus Co. It and a matching WSA type Triode-B audio amplifier with nameplate were obtained from the same source. (Please see the separate auction listing for the amplifier.) Provenance is uncertain but they may have been used in the City of Seattle's harbor radio station KPE for ship-to-shore communications. The radio was designed in 1918 and first made for the U.S. Navy. A year or two later it was also made in several variants for commercial use by WSA and a few other makers. This one tunes 300 to 7500 meters (40 to 3,000 kilocycles) in 6 bands. It measures about 20 x 10 x 12 inches. The hardwood cabinet has some marks and scars in keeping with its age but overall condition is very good – no chip, cracks, or other damage on the case or on the Bakelite panel. The back of the cabinet has some small holes, probably drilled for some purpose in the past. The interior of the cabinet is lined with copper sheeting. Engraved markings on the panel are clear and bright. The interior and exterior appear to be all original. Included is a type UX-201A vacuum tube that tested 100 on a TV-12 Superior transconductance tester with a 0-150 scale on which 80 and above is good. It is shock mounted and accessible through the hinged door in the front panel. The original grid leak resistor is in its holder and is marked 2 meg. A and B voltages, an outdoor antenna, and earphones were connected to the radio for a test. Local broadcast stations were heard with good volume and tone, including a few golden oldies on KIXI. No signal was heard using an outboard crystal detector. The buzzer was tested without success but no attempt was made to adjust it. Net weight is 29 pounds. Here we start with a vintage & extremely nice looking Philco Transitone tube wood AM radio in fantastic working condition. The model number on the beautiful Philco is PT-7 & it was produced around the 1942 era. The wood cabinet is solid & tight with no missing veneer. This cabinet has been polished & still retains it's original sheen or shine through out the entire cabinet & looks great not to mention the grain in the wood is extremely nice looking to say the least. The wood louvered speaker grill is very nice looking & adds a very nice touch to the style of the cabinet. Now this radio is not perfect as there is a very light crack in the veneer on the right top side right where the cabinet starts to bend around to the side of the cabinet. It is barely visible in picture #7 but if you look hard you may be able to see it. This slight crack in the veneer is tight against the cabinet & does not stick out like a sore thumb. For a radio that is 70+ years old & it in original finish it is very sweet looking & believe me this radio looks fantastic. All pictures can be supersized so you may get a good view at this good looking radio. The glass AM slide ruled dial scale & dial pointer are both in great looking & working condition but the dial scale has an extremely small amount of ware on the very top edge near the middle of the dial but this in no way take away the looks of the radio by any means what so ever. There is also a nice bright working dial light as you can see. The 2-marbled brown bakelite/plastic control knobs are in excellent looking & working condition. The Philco Transitone emblem on the bottom front side is in fantastic looking condition. There is a reproduction back cover that someone has made & it fits tight & secure & looks great. The chassis is in great condition & it is a 5-tube unit with 2-controls & both controls have been lubricated & are in great working condition. The chassis has had all new electrolytic capacitor/filters installed & all paper/wax capacitors have been replaced. There also has been a nice new electric cord installed. When this beautiful Philco is powered up, it pulls in AM stations all across that nice dial scale & plays them clean, clear & loud with good tone quality. This is a sweet radio & would make a very nice addition to your radio collection or as a stand alone radio as it power, beauty & looks hold it's own & will surely be the talk of the room by all whom enter. I have several vintage radios listed on eBay at this time so you may want to take a peak & see if there isn't something else that you just can't live without:-) The size of this gem is 12-1/4" long 7" wide & 8" high so I would estimate the shipping cost to be around $17.00 plus or minus a couple of dollars (depending on your location) INSURED & mailed in the USA.
